Experience the John Bunyan Boat

Welcome to the John Bunyan Boat

The John Bunyan Community Boat offers a range of scenic river cruises along the River Great Ouse in Bedford, enabling both local people and visitors to Bedford access to the wonderful river environment.

The John Bunyan Boat is operated by Bedford & Milton Keynes Waterway Enterprise Limited on behalf of the Bedford & Milton Keynes Waterway Trust. All funds and donations raised from the John Bunyan Community Boat go towards the development of a 16 miles (26Km) new waterway park, which will link the River Great Ouse in Bedford to the Grand Union Canal in Milton Keynes. The boat is run entirely by volunteers and is open to everyone.

The John Bunyan Boats public cruising season starts in April and runs through until the end of October each year.

The John Bunyan Community Boat volunteers have been awarded in the Queens Platinum Jubilee year, a Queens Award for Volunteer Service.

Volunteers wanted!

The John Bunyan Community Boats is entirely run by volunteers and are central to the success of the overall project by raising our profile with the public in Bedford and providing The Trust’s source of income.  To keep these running and deliver an outstanding experience to over 7,000 guests throughout the season is a fantastic team achievement involving many people in the crewing, maintenance, and administration.

If you are interested and are willing to offer some of your time to this fantastic project then we would love to hear from you, so please get in touch to find out more.

The John Bunyan Community Boat is crewed by five or six volunteers on each trip and we are always looking for enthusiastic individuals to join our team both on and off the water.

On board various roles that are carried out by the crew for each trip including: Certified MCA Boat Master, Helm, Purser, Deckhand, Cabin crew

We are currently looking to recruit volunteers for both shore and boat roles, in particular we want to hear from people who may like to be involved in our Commercial, Marketing shore roles as well volunteers looking to progress to Helm, Purser or already qualified as MCA Certified Boat Master – it’s a great people-facing role, out and about on the water.

If you are interested in our shore based roles we are looking for help with our Sales, Marketing please download and complete the volunteer form.

Behind every successful boat crew is a ‘Shore based team’ with all kinds of skills including IT, sales, marketing, PR, admin, finance, community outreach, management, maintenance, and training.

If you are interested in finding out more about volunteering roles please get in touch by emailing Stephen Goosey at volunteering@johnbunyanboat.org or download the application form and email back to volunteering@johnbunyanboat.org
